"Images of the Immortal" is part of this important trend, giving us a rare book-length treatment of one of the wonders of world art, the Palace of Eternal Joy (Yonglegong) in Shanxi Province's Ruicheng City.

The palace is devoted to Lu Dongbin, a Daoist immortal, and has three halls, each one filled with murals about Lu or other Daoist deities. In the yearthe North Wei Dynasty (AD ) relocated its capital city to Pingcheng (today’s Datong in Shanxi Province). Under the influence of Taoism, a great number of Taoist temples were mushrooming in the city.
